Pete Allen figured out a way to cut back on yard work. But it was the ladies in the family who figured out
how to turn his solution into a family business.
For more than a quarter of a century, Allen had been putting in beautiful fields of artificial turf for athletes
with his company Track Masters. Three years ago, he decided to bring the idea home.
“It’s her fault,” Allen said, pointing to his daughter, Kathy Allen. “She bought this play set and dumped it in
my back yard. I was recovering from heart valve replacement.”
With time at home, Allen looked at his Mansfield back yard and thought how nice synthetic grass would
look out there, too.
“We were putting in the turf at R.L Anderson (Stadium), and we had some pieces left,” Allen said. “We
pulled them out of the Dumpster and put it together.”
Three years later, the women in his family figured out how to turn Allen’s idea into a business. Allen sold
Track Masters in March and retired. His wife, Janice, however, wasn’t ready to leave Texas.
“If I’m going to stay in Texas with all the kids and grandkids, what can I do to stay here and make money?”
she wondered.
Together, she and daughter, Kathy Allen, and daughter-in-law, Debbie Allen, they decided that if an artificial
turf yard worked in Pete Allen’s back yard, it would work for other people, too. In June, the three ladies
started Turf Yards.
“There’s no fire ants, no bugs, no allergies, no maintenance, no fertilizer, no water,” Janice Allen said.
And it’s a long-term solution. The synthetic grasses come in 13 varieties from fescue to St. Augustine and
last 20-25 years, Pete Allen points out. The fibers are cushioned by a fine, curly thatch embedded in the
turf, packed with tiny rubber balls for extra comfort and installed over a couple of inches of drainage rocks.
Tiny holes in the turf let water seep out, just like on a football field. The soil is carefully prepared so that no
weeds will come through.
“If you fix your yard permanently with artificial turf, you’ve extended your living area,” Janice Allen said. “How
many hours does a person in Texas spend working on their yard or paying someone to do it?”
The savings on water and mowing are also good for the environment, Janice Allen pointed out.
“We want cities to use if for medians and playgrounds,” Debbie Allen said. “They would save so much
water.”
Like Pete Allen, Frank Maddock of Pantego just wanted to look out and see something green without
having to spend all his time caring for it.
“We had some grass and a lot of dirt,” Maddock said. “We have two big trees that keep the area shaded.
We were getting more and more mud and less grass.”
A couple of years ago, Maddock stopped mowing and paid to have it done. “I hate yard work,” he admitted.
Since getting artificial turf, though, Maddock likes his 1,000-square-foot back yard.
“It’s kind of shocking to see the whole area being green,” he said. “It looks like freshly cut grass.
Sometimes when the sunlight hits it directly, it looks like bluegrass.”
Pete Allen still doesn’t like yard work, but his wife doesn’t seem to mind.
“He never does yard work,” Janice Allen said. “I guess the one time he did, he decided to do it right.”
